Sometimes God Just Says ‘No’

God told Abraham, "No."

In Gen. 17 Abraham asked God to let his son, Ishmael, be the one through whom the promise of blessing was fulfilled.  God said no.

Has God ever said “No” to you?  Here are a few reasons why he may have done so.

Three Reasons:

  1. To teach us to have faith
  2. To show us that He accomplishes great things in our lives, and not that we accomplish great things in our lives (aka exalt him, humble us).
  3. B/c a 1,000 other things are providentially waiting their turn to fall into place and be better than any “Yes” we could have ever imagined.

What are some other reasons God may tell us NO???

What a brief but packed post. I’m trying to think of other examples of people in the Bible whom God said “no” to but Abraham’s example is excellent.

So often in life, we acquire “things” from “places” we never should have visited. In Abraham and Sarah’s case, Ishmael was a product of their faithlessness. Sometimes, in His grace, He permits these things to be a part of our lives. Other times, in His sovereign knowledge, He does not.

God give us the grace to receive his “No’s” as eagerly as we accept His “Yes”.
