That is good stuff brother. I really liked the quote. The only question I have about it, is how does Dr. MacArthur deal with us being students of culture? I am thinking of John Stott's "Between Two Worlds." MacArthur's quote seems to suggest that the preacher should lock himself up in his study and never come out. But to do so would land us squarely in the land of the Biblical text with no footing in our current setting. To quote Dr. Vines "The expositor, therefore, must bridge the gap between exegetical studies and the preparation of a message that will be helpful and practical to contemporary listeners." (Power in the Pulpit, 97) How would MacArthur suggest we bridge the gap between the two worlds? I have not read his book on preaching, though I would like too. Thanks for sharing Deek!

We are doing well, Mrs. Kathie. We definitely miss Bethany and her sweet, faithful demeanor. She was such a blessing to our church! Lauren and I think about and miss the great folks down in lower Alabama all the time.

Yes, sat under his preaching for at least a year and he is a fine quoter. Hope you and Lauren are doing great and I am confident you are; Bethany is still missing you both, especially your sermons, Deek.

It's good to know I'm not the only one who read it that way. Maybe our friend, Calvin, needs to lay off the late-night eating/drinking!

Ha ha. Interesting. The translation by Battles that I'm reading says "Why is it that the soul not only vaguely roves about but conceives many useful things, ponders concerning many, EVEN DIVINES THE FUTURE - all while man sleeps..."

So, from another translation, it does not seem like you're reading that incorrectly. Very interesting...
